Deputies with the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office say that while school buses are one of the safest ways for children to commute, there are risks involved when getting on or off of the bus.
To help everyone to be more safe during National School Bus Safety Week, deputies have provided the following tips:
Tips for drivers
- Always stop for a school bus with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing.
- Passing a stopped school bus is illegal!
Tips for kids
- Arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes early.
- Stand at least 5 steps back from the curb.
- Wait for the bus to stop, the door to open, and the driver to signal it’s safe before getting on.
- Make sure the driver can see you and you can see the driver!
Officials with the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office added that it is up to everyone to do their part in working together to keep all of the kids in the community safe.
