(WFRV) – Officials in Manitowoc County say a retired lieutenant has officially been charged for one count of Misconduct in Office by the Brown County District Attorney’s Office.

According to a release from the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office, Lieutenant David Remiker retired from the Sheriff’s Office’s Metro Drug Unit on January 31, 2024.

Officials say the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office conducted an internal audit in February 2024 that wound up revealing that several thousands of dollars worth of forfeiture funds were not properly deposited into the necessary accounts.

The sheriff’s office then immediately requested that the Wisconsin Department of Justice further investigate the findings of the internal audit.

The Brown County District Attorney’s Office also assisted with the investigation and officially charged the retired lieutenant for his believed role in the matter.

Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig says, “This charge reflects solely on the actions of one individual and does not represent the 113 dedicated and hardworking members of the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office.”

At this time, no other information is available and, due to this being an active criminal case, the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office will not be releasing any additional details.
