MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – With snow predicted for most of the state next week, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging caution to people as they go out on frozen waters.

The DNR doesn’t monitor the ice conditions, but they are monitored locally. Some local businesses, such as outfitters, bait shops or even fishing clubs are the DNR’s top recommendations for local conditions.

Every body of water has varying characteristics, so it’s important to check for inlets, outlets or narrows, along with currents because all of these may thin the ice.

Those who plan to go out on ice should stay alert for pressure ridges or ice heaves, they may be dangerous due to thin ice. This could happen on Lake Winnebago and the Bay of Green Bay.

Safety tips include:

  • Bringing a cell phone and letting somebody know where you are and when you’ll be back
  • Wear proper clothing and equipment, including a flotation device
  • Bring mittens or gloves, and an extra pair too
  • Carry a spud bar to check ice
  • Wear creepers that attach to boots as it may help prevent slipping
  • Do not travel at night or in unfamiliar places
  • Leave a written note of plans and make sure the cell phone is fully charged
