SHAWANO, Wis. (WFRV) – Shawano County held a meeting open to the public on Thursday to listen to concerns, questions and thoughts about a possible ‘wheel tax.’
Shawano County Administrative Coordinator Jim Davel said the idea came from the struggles that counties face in terms of revenue due to state regulations.

“This is one way that counties can generate funding,” Davel said. “It’s specifically for our roads and bridges which are important parts of our county. We wanted to at least discuss this going forward.”
The Wheel Tax is referred to as Ordinance No. 1-25, which can be viewed at this link. It was created on January 7 by the Shawano County Highway Committee, and approved by the Executive Committee on January 15. Here is what it would entail:
- $20 annual county vehicle registration fee
- Revenue from fees would go toward maintaining county highways, bridges and other infrastructure

The ordinance would take effect on January 1, 2026.
