‘Make responsible choices’: Police department in Wisconsin hosts academy on impaired drivers after 14 OWI arrests in 2025

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WFRV) – Just under two months into 2025, one police department in Wisconsin has already made 14 arrests for Operating While Intoxicated, leading to a ‘Citizen Police Academy’ event.

The Wauwatosa Police Department hosted a Citizen Police Academy to invite locals to explore and learn the ways that officers can detect and deal with impaired drivers.

Investigations into an OWI depend on the circumstances, however, as officers have to observe the movement of a vehicle while also testing the behavior of a driver during a traffic stop.

Officers perform ‘Standardized Field Sobriety Tests,’ which vary in technique, from walking in straight lines to waving a finger in front of a subject’s eyes to see if they can follow it.

According to the post, somebody is either injured or killed in Wisconsin every two hours in an impaired driving crash.
