Fond du Lac School District considers AI-equipped cameras for security

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) – The Fond du Lac School District discussed the future of safety and security during a news conference Tuesday.

District officials announced that if the Fond du Lac referendum passes, funds would be used to install cameras equipped with artificial intelligence capable of detecting firearms and other weapons.

“Since 2017, we’ve had over 30 referrals for terrorist threats from students, essentially making some type of threat to the school or other students—none of which have been acted upon—but we take those seriously in the district attorney’s office and want to make sure that students can be safe while they’re learning,” said Fond du Lac District Attorney Eric Toney. “Teachers can focus on teaching and be safe while they’re in those school districts.”

The district says it would test the cameras at Fond du Lac High School first, but the plan depends on the referendum passing.
