GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – A jolt of elation and alleviation could be felt as Cheeseheads packed into Titletown roared when Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy announced Green Bay’s selection of Wide Receiver Matthew Golden in the First Round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Packers’ selection of Golden on Thursday night marked the first time in 23 years that Green Bay selected a wide receiver in the first round of the draft, and that long wait could be felt throughout the massive crowd.
Golden being at the Draft and getting to walk out into a sea of hometown fans made the moment extra special, undoubtedly giving Green and Gold(en) faithful goosebumps as they soaked up the moment.

The former Texas Longhorn, and Houston, Texas, native also relished in the moment. Golden yelled in excitement after hugging Commissioner Goodell, waving his Packers jersey and showing it off with pride.
Throughout the draft process, Golden said he had a feeling that he would hear his name called by Green Bay.
“I knew once I shook his hand, something just told me that they’re going to come get me. Like I said, when I came for a visit up here and got to run with the coaching staff, it was remarkable. Definitely a great organization, and I’m so happy to be here and just get ready to go to work,” Golden said after becoming a Packer.

Golden led the Longhorns in 2024 with 987 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns on 58 receptions.
The 21-year-old should immediately make an impact amongst the Packers’ young wide receiver room, giving quarterback Jordan Love another weapon in the passing game.
Thursday was certainly a ‘Golden’ moment within a storied franchise.
