Police identify man accused of shooting UW-Whitewater gymnast, charges forwarded to Walworth County DA’s Office

WHITEWATER, Wis. (WFRV) – Police in southern Wisconsin have released the identity of the man who was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a UW-Whitewater gymnast.

According to the Whitewater Police Department, 23-year-old Chad Richards of Loves Park, Illinois is the suspect who was arrested in the murder of 21-year-old Kara Welsh. On August 30 around 11:55 p.m., police responded to an apartment for a report of a person who was shot.

When officers got to the scene, a woman (later identified as Welsh) was found dead. She reportedly had multiple gunshot wounds.

The initial release said that leading up to the shooting, an altercation happened between Welsh and Richards.

The following charges were forwarded to the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office, according to police:

  • First-Degree Intentional Homicide
  • Endangering Safety by the Use of a Dangerous Weapon
  • Disorderly Conduct while Armed

The investigation is ongoing and no additional information was provided. As of this time, no official charges have been filed.
