GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Shipyard District, Inc., a nonprofit business association formed and supported by taxpaying business and property owners in the Shipyard District, is urging the relocation of Green Bay’s coal piles.
In a letter, officials said the coal piles along the Fox River have obstructed development in the district’s corridor for more than 100 years. They claim the piles have hindered Brown County housing and business projects, job creation, port activity, and over $150 million in potential development, while also impacting residents’ quality of life.

The letter to the Brown County Board of Supervisors stated that the coal pile sites represent one of the largest opportunities for public and mixed-use development in the history of the district and Brown County.

“On behalf of the taxpaying Brown County business owners, property owners, and residents of the Shipyard District and its neighborhoods, and in recognition of the approaching grant funding deadline, we stand together as a westside community to urge the Brown County Board of Supervisors and other Brown County leaders to finally come to a good-faith, mutually beneficial agreement with the Clemens Reiss Coal Company and the City of Green Bay, apply the allocated grant funds to advance the coal pile relocation project, and support our community at the heart of Brown County.”
