Teenager narrowly escapes Fond du Lac house fire deemed to be act of arson, suspect in custody

(WFRV) – On Monday, a teenager narrowly escaped from a second-story window of a Fond du Lac house that was fully in flames, two days later a suspect was taken into custody for arson.

According to a release from the Fond du Lac Police Department and Fond du Lac Fire Rescue, authorities were called to reports of a fully engulfed house fire in the 200 block of Packer Street shortly after 11 p.m. on September 23.

While crews arrived at the scene, a 16-year-old girl had managed to climb out of a second-story window, falling to the ground to escape. Authorities called the girl’s escape a “courageous effort.”

The fire was put out before spreading to nearby homes but not before it caused extensive damage to the Packer Street home. Firefighters were able to provide critical medical care to the teenager.

During the investigation, with help from the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI), it was reportedly determined that an ‘improvised incendiary device’ was used to target the residence, prompting an arson investigation.

Authorities say the 60-year-old suspect is facing multiple charges and is being held at the Fond du Lac County Jail.

The 16-year-old victim was transported to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee for injuries sustained from the fire and fall. She remains at Children’s Hospital in stable condition.
