There are multiple ways to file taxes in Wisconsin. The following ways are listed in the release:

  • Direct Filing – A free and brand-new online service allows eligible taxpayers to file federal income taxes directly with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Direct File is a seamless transition with WisTax, allowing taxpayers to file their state returns.
  • Tax Filing Software – There are various filing options online, from simple to advanced methods. Support may vary, but it’s best to research before deciding on software.
  • Tax Preparer – Taxpayers can speak with qualified professionals if they have a complex scenario to manage or prefer more direct help.
  • Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) – VITA is free tax preparation assistance that is available to eligible taxpayers through the program. Some community organizations offer this, along with IRS-certified volunteers. More information can be found on the VITA Locator Tool or the AARP Site Locator.

There are also a variety of credits that taxpayers could be eligible for, including the expanded Wisconsin Child and Dependent Care credit. More information on this credit can be found here.
